Dog Training Classes

Willamette Humane Society offers a variety of dog obedience courses for you and your canine friend. Looking for a way to improve your dog’s behavior and manners? From obedience classes to private help with specific behavior issues, WHS has a solution for you and your dog! Learn to train your dog using gentle, positive methods taught by the only Certified Pet Dog Trainer in the Salem and Keizer area.
All dog training classes are held at WHS, located at 4246 Turner Road SE in Salem, Oregon.
To register, fill out a registration form (PDF) and then register one of three ways:
1. Bring the completed form and sign up in person at Davenport’s Den, the retail pet supply store located inside Willamette Humane Society.
2. Register and pay by phone by calling Davenport’s Den at (503) 585-5900 ext. 322.
3. Mail your registration form with payment. (Class size is limited. If you choose this method, we recommend you call first to check class availability (503) 585-5900 ext. 322.

Understanding Your Dog
Pre-requisite: None.
Cost: $10 per household
- This seminar is free for adopters of shelter dogs and for those registering for training classes
- Discusses basic dog psychology and leadership
- Up-to-date information from current research in the field of canine behavior
- Gives solutions for solving common behavior problems
- Discusses crate-training and separation anxiety
- Explains the different collars, harnesses and leashes, and when to use which type
- Prizes given to those who attend!
Puppy Kindergarten
(4 week course)
Pre-requisites: Puppies must be fully vaccinated (proof required). Owners must attend “Understanding Your Dog” prior to first class.
Cost: $70 or $60 for puppies adopted from an animal shelter (proof of adoption required).
- Safe, managed environment for your young pup
- Gentle, positive training methods
- Focuses on socialization and confidence building
- Includes playtime where pups can meet and interact
- Teaches attention and impulse control skills
- Fun for both puppies and humans!
Dog 101
(6 week course)
Pre-requisites: Owners must attend “Understanding Your Dog” prior to first class.
Cost: $95 per dog or $85 for dog adopted from a shelter (proof required).
- Small class size
- Gentle, positive training methods
- Safe, managed classroom environment
- Teaches not only obedience, but also good manners
- Owners learn how to train their dog and how to maintain training and good behavior at home
Dog 201
(6 week course)
Pre-requisite: Dog 101 or instructor approval.
Cost: $95 or $85 if dog was adopted from a shelter (proof required).
- Small class size
- Gentle, positive training methods
- Advances the dog’s training and strengthens compliance
- Classes held at fun public locations
- Works on training in real-life situations
Tricks & Games
(6 week course)
Pre-requisites: Dog 101 or instructor approval.
Cost: $95 or $85 if dog was adopted from a shelter (proof required)
- Small class size
- Gentle, positive training methods
- Covers dozens of tricks, from traditional to unusual
- Teaches games you can play with your dog or other dogs and owners
- Fun for both dogs and humans!
